Identity theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in America. We all need to be extremely careful to protect our personal information. This includes bank account numbers, email and / or account passwords and user names, mother's maiden name, student id's and especially Social Security Numbers. Very few people actually have a right to ask for your SS number. Your school's administration, credit applications, insurance companies, doctors and hospitals need that number. Blockbuster does not.
If you ever get an email from any institution that says anything like - "Please verify your account numbers" etc. it is ALWAYS a fraud. No reputable firm will ever ask you to verify this information. They will try to trick you over the telephone too. If anyone ever calls you and asks for that sort of information, hang up, look up the number of the institution that the caller claimed to represent and call that number. Don't ask the caller for the number because obviously if they are a fraud they will give you their number and not that institution's correct phone number.
It is a good idea to write down your Check Card and any Credit Card numbers that you carry on a separate piece of paper (or photo copy) and hide it in a safe place in your house. If your wallet is ever stolen you are to call the police first and then any bank or credit institution that was involved. If you lose it you don't have to call the police, otherwise do the same as above.
DO NOT CARRY YOUR SOCIAL SECURITY CARD ON YOUR PERSON. KEEP IT IN A SAFE PLACE AT HOME.
