Thought I'd post these pictures from this weekend we spent at Bear Island for our Anniversary. This island is 3.5 miles long and .5 miles wide on the Outer Banks of North Carolina. We got to take a fun little ferry over there. Plus it was a nice cheap vacation...

Some of these are getting old but I wanted Grandma to see them. The first batch is from a hike we took at the end of January through Falls Lake State Park. Then there are pictures of the Herb Garden that Bradley made (I helped stain it!). We are planning to plant it pretty soon. And the last set of pictures is from this past weekend when we rode our bikes into downtown Durham.

So this is one side of our kitchen, the oven and everything.

This is ME in the kitchen. We hung this mirror (or I should say Bradley hung the mirror) over the kitchen sink. When you are standing at the sink you can see out the window which is on the opposite wall. Very nice feature while washing dishes.

This is the cutlery holder that Bradley expertly designed and built himself to perfectly fit all of our cutlery! He was very proud of it and it was very useful. Much nicer than what we could have bought in a store. On the left side you will see the pot holders that I crocheted!

And this is our brand new (used) couch in our living room.

I'm not sure if you all can tell what this is, but I'll tell you. Its my computer screen after I submitted my application to Duke University! and that was the last one I had to submit! So now I just have to wait to hear back from schools...for a few months...
Thanks to everyone who supported this process by giving me Christmas and graduation money! I couldn't have paid the fees without your help. and thanks to Mom and Brad for proofreading.

So I FINALLY got the camera I've been lusting over for at least a year, and to say the least, I adore it! I decided to post some of the photos we've taken together.

The first few are from Blue Ridge. The first four being from Korey's grandparent's house. They own a LOT more land on the mountain than I thought they did. I learned this as we attempted to walk up said mountain! =(

This one is from the cabin Korey's step-dad just sold. It's still being built, but you can tell he really has an eye for picking some amazing landscapes. This is actually the view from the far right of the wrap around porch, before you even step on. So the view is very long and very majestic in person.

Our friend's son also turned one this past weekend! So we went up to celebrate. He's such a cutie!

I know mom & Mike don't want grand kids any time soon, but wouldn't this be sweet...?

So what do you think? Can I hone my skills enough to go pro? If not, too bad! You're going to have to get stuck seeing a lot more photos from me! =)

Sad 10K News

For those of you who were interested, I'm disappointed to announce that though I was able to raise more than enough money (which will all still be going to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society) I've decided not to run in the race on the 27th. I've been training really hard, but for the past two weeks I've been having frequent pains in my left hip, thigh, and knee. I haven't run all week and the pain has persisted. I don't have time to find a doctor and make an appointment right now so I decided its probably best to stay off the track until I can get the issue checked out. Hopefully I can get the issue resolved soon since I wont have to worry about work for much longer.

I just figured I'd mention it.

Last night during the snow storm my store closed two hours early so I was thankfully able to make it home before the hill iced over...but at this point NO ONE is able to leave my neighborhood. Not only is the parking lot a frozen block of ice, but we live at the bottom of the steepest hill around. Last time there was ice police had to block off our entire road because so many people were getting in accidents trying to get home or to leave.

I had my first skiing experience in Ober Gatlinburg this weekend! It started off...not so great. I fell quite a few times. But with Jameson's help I managed to learn to "wedge" and was able to successfully slide down the green slope without falling at all!

I know you all are dying to know exactly what I teach, so here is a glimpse into my math class!!!!

Tommorow I am reviewing with my kids for our Unit 5 Test on Time and Measurement, so I wrote a little Christmas Story with math problems in leiu of a normal study guide....and it stars me and ALL OF YOU!

Please note it is not accurate (I know Emma is not 6 feet tall) nor predicting the future (I did not buy David an X-box or DVDS for stocking stuffers).

But really, see if you can solve all 30 math problems. Are you smarter than my math students?
(I will give you the first answer since my clock image will not upload.)

Ms. Versaci's Christmas Break

Chapter One: Flying Home
Ms. Versaci is going home to Atlanta, Georgia for Holiday Break on Monday. She is at her house in Oxford, NC getting ready to go. She looks at the clock.

It is (1)10:05. Her flight is at 12:53! She only has (2) _________ hours and ________ minutes until her flight. It takes her 45 minutes to get to RDU airport. She needs one hour to get through security, so she has to be at RDU at (3) _________. This means she needs to leave her house at (4) _________.

Chapter Two: Buying Presents
On Tuesday, Ms. Versaci needs to go shopping for presents. She needs to buy presents for her boyfriend David, her Secret Santa, Emma, and stocking stuffers for all 5 siblings. She leaves the house at 9:15. She gets to the mall at 10:20, meaning she drove for (5) _________ hours and _________ minutes.

She first needs to buy Emma a scarf. She knows Emma is almost 6 feet tall, and she wants a scarf that is that same height. However, scarves are measured in inches! So she will need a scarf that is (6) _________ inches long.

For David, she buys an X-box 360, which originally cost $275. However, there is a sale at Game Stop and she gets 65% off, meaning she only pays (7) _________. What a deal!

Chapter Three: Wrapping Gifts and Decorating the House

When she measured, she had a total of 145 square feet to cover in wrapping paper. Each roll covers 29 square feet, so she will need to buy (11) _________ rolls of wrapping paper.

Ms. Versaci’s Dad needs to buy lights at Walmart for the house. Their house is a rectangle with a length of 35 feet and a width of 91 feet. Ms. V’s Dad is going to need (12) _________ feet of lights. Chapter Four: Cooking for the Christmas Eve Party

Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

Hello Family!!

Training kicks off this weekend for the 10K I am running to benefit the Leukemia and Lymphoma society. That means at 8:30AM on this chilly saturday morning, I am lacing up my running shoes and hitting the pavement for 3 miles. By February 27th I'll hopefully be able to knock out the full 6.2 miles in under an hour.

But i need your help! Everyone on the Georgia Tech team, as well as teams all over the state (and nation) are raising money to find a cure for blood cancer. I have committed to raising at least $200, which is basically getting a $10 donation from 20 people. Even if you can only donate $5, every little bit helps! If you cant donate right now, dont worry, we'll be accepting donations until the race in February. I'll be sure to keep everyone posted on my progress.

Making Strides!

I have a few pictures from the breast cancer walk! Our team ended up raising over $2,000 and as a whole the event raised over $1 mil! So thanks for donating!

Here is some of our team (me and rachel are the girls in hats in the front). The woman on the far left is Mrs. Gilbert, a 13 year breast cancer survivor we had come to speak at Tech a few weeks ago.

We walked a 5k through Atlanta stopping up just a bit of traffic. It was really cool.

This one is of me, our president Chris, and the publicity chair Justin.

Just as a forewarning, I'm doing a 10k race in February for Leukemia and I'll be looking for donations again then. This race is legit and it is mandatory that we each raise $150-200 (unlike Making Strides which was just suggested). But dont worry, I'll keep you all posted on that, training starts next week!

Like i mentioned, I was in Alpharetta with my girlfriend Rachel from study abroad and a bunch of her friends. We got to see multiple fire works shows from a parking lot and even bought a few things to set off in the drive way...I might have a few more pics once she puts hers up, but i thought i would share these!

Fourth of July 2009

This was the 4th time Connie and I reserved a room at The Westin in Downtown Atlanta for the the 4th of July. Because of my travels with Oracle I was able to get the room for free on hotel bonus points! This was the best view yet. It was a clear night and the fireworks were stunning. We were so high up (62nd Floor!) that we were actually eye-level with some of the fireworks and were looking down at others.

This is the basic view we had, snapped as soon as we checked in. Fireworks were front and center!

Centennial Park starting to fill up. This was about 4:00 PM. A long wait for them! We went up to the Sundial lounge (73rd Floor) and had a drink and then came back to the room around 6:30. Previously we'd eaten at different restaurants in the area, but the majority of them in this neighborhood are closed for Independence day, and the rest of them are crowded, noisy and over-priced. This year we packed some sandwiches, pickles and potato chips and ate dinner in the room.

This was the last photo of the night to show the crowd that we didn't have to deal with. I zoomed in a little for this one. Nice to be able to sip a glass of wine from a comfy chair and use a clean bathroom with no line as needed, and to not have to drive home in the mess that ensues after such a celebration.

Everyone is all over the place this year for the 4th of July, Kacie is going to be with Adam's family, Twila is going up to Blue Ridge, Chey and Veronica are in FLA, George is going to be with Dad in PA, and mom and mike are of course going to the Westin to see the fireworks.

As it turns out I am probably going to my girlfriend Rachel's house to set off a few fireworks myself yay!

Everyone knows that Kacie had perhaps the most difficult year of her life. She was hired by Teach For America to teach in a low-income school and agreed to teach learning disabled. After she got there she found out that the school she was hired for included children with discipline issues in her classes. Moreover, due to the bad economy there were numerous budget cuts throughout the school year that made her job even more difficult. She spent a good deal of her own money on her kids and had to deal with a pay cut, a cut in benefits and the elimination of substitute teachers, which meant whenever another teacher was out she had to cover for her and give up her down-time which was reserved for lesson planning.

Beyond all of that, Kacie was exposed to lots of viruses and was ill quite a bit.

Even so when the state test scores came back, 75% of her students passed in the A and B range, which is 10 points higher than the 65% goal set by the school. This is would be a notable achievement with average kids in an average school district. In her case I would use the word outstanding.

First week of my summer school

As you all know, i am at Tech for the summer taking three classes and two labs. After going to all my classes and labs, I have to say, it is going to be a somewhat intense summer for me. I will definitely be busier than all of my friends.

I pulled up my first homework assignment in Inorganic Chemistry and the last question on it is "Compute the relative uncertainty in the position if the velocity of an electron is known to be within 1.5% of the speed of light." Um...yeah.

I did manage to squeeze in some fun though, and went to my first every baseball game at Turner Field in Atlanta! I got free tickets for me and 4 friends from the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity. It was a GA vs. GT game and sadly we lost.

But we still had fun! I got to see 12 of the kids i knew on study abroad, which was cool.

My project at work just received a "Vision Award" :

The Vision Awards recognize significant achievements that exemplify a commitment to our company’s vision and values. Entries can represent a group or individual effort that has or will contribute to the long-term success of the company.

Of course, I didn't get to go to the fancy dinner or anything but it's the thought that counts!

Here is a write up of it, in case you are burning with curiosity. I think it's interesting but I'm guessing it is probably quite boring for everyone else!

Nomination Summary:
The Atlanta Field Service and IT MSS team, in conjunction with the field IT and Field Service teams at all sites, replaced the aging WFA solution from Ventyx with the new iWerks and TOA solution, for every Cox employee in every system in 2008. This was accomplished without severe disruption to the business and has provided a stable, extensible platform so we can extend even more capabilities to our Universal Home Techs in the future. The end goal is providing high quality service to Cox's customers through the use of a standard process enabled by the tool.

Situation:
Since its introduction into the workplace in the late 1990's Cox's Technicians have relied on our WFA, or Workforce Automation, solution to manage their daily workload. The tool has allowed Cox to implement programs like "Home Start", where our Techs don't have to come into the office in the mornings, instead using laptops or PDA's to get their work assignments for the day. The solution has become critical to the productivity and financial performance of our Field Service teams.

Although we've had a great run with our WFA solution, we have the same version of software in production that we've had since it was launched in the late 1990's. Our efforts to upgrade to more recent versions have all been troublesome, each having significantly disruptive issues with features, ICOMS integration, and stability hampering their viability for a business so dependent on the product.

Finally, Ventyx - the product vendor - announced plans to focus their development efforts on the Utilities market and away from Telecommunications, as well as announcing the end-of-support date for Cox's version of WFA in 2009.

We had to replace WFA and we had to replace it quickly!

Solution:
The Field Service and IT MSS teams conducted extensive evaluations of solution providers and decided on a two-pronged approach.

. The ETA Direct work order management application hosted by TOA Technologies
. iWerks portal solution, developed by Cox IT, for our in-house Techs which would enhance the capabilities of ETA Direct

The two communities who perform Cox's Field Service work are our Home Service Technicians, Universal Home Technicians, Dispatchers, Routers, and Installation and Service Contractors. The ETA Direct tool would be extended to both of those communities, marking the first time the company has had a standard view into ALL work being done on a daily basis, regardless of source. Our previous WFA solution was only for full-time Cox employees.

One unique aspect of this solution is that both the iWerks and ETA Direct tools are web-based - no software to install and maintain on laptops. In fact, the chosen solution frees Cox to move away from high end laptops to lesser cost models and even PDAs in the future.

However, that also proved to be one of the largest challenges in the development and deployment of the iWerks solution. The laptops used by the Techs connect to the network through a broadband data card. Performance of the tool over that slow connection was paramount, and the team worked diligently to shave off precious seconds to get the tool working within defined parameters.

Additionally, teams from the local site and the Atlanta MSS team performed coverage studies prior to the deployment of the next generation WFA solution at the local site to determine where there were coverage issues. The carriers were then brought in to address those issues prior to the launch of the solution, which helped ensure a successful rollout.

Perhaps the biggest challenge faced by the team was the deployment of the solution. Beginning with our pilot site, Cleveland, in May and ending with our final site, Palos Verdes in December, the team rolled out to every site and every Technician in 2008. The coordination required to train and deploy 4,500 full-time employees and 2000 contractors on the new solution was daunting, but the team developed and refined a solid procedure for managing the change so that the later site deployments were effective and efficient.

Results:
During calendar year 2008, the extended team successfully executed a plan to migrate all users off the legacy WFA system and onto the next generation solution. By January of 2009, there were no more Field Service users depending on the legacy WFA system for their daily work order management.

. Financial: By executing the project on time and budget, the project team was able to save the company $3.6MM in projected cost associated with staying with our previous WFA Vendor. The operational benefits tied to reducing calls into our back office have resulted in a 12% reduction in back office cost per point or roughly $3.3MM given equivalent volume.

. Enterprise view: Deployment of ETA Direct has given Field Service dispatchers, supervisors, and management now have a complete view of where all its Technicians, full-time or contract, are at any time. All sites now have a smart system that gives proactive alerts when a technician is projected to arrive late.

. Improved Ability to Communicate Arrival Times: A key feature of the ETA Direct solution is its ability to accurately predict arrival times for a Tech to any job based on recorded past performance. The new solution also offers Cox the ability to share these estimates across the enterprise and even to our external customers via the IVR and web. The feature that supports this capability is called "Where's My Tech?" and has been deployed to all iNav users and is planned to be added to the IVR and Web in 2009.

. Extensible platform: The combination of ETA Direct, supported by iWerks, gives Cox the ability to grow its capabilities quickly and at a minimal cost in the future. As an example, the original version of iWerks was augmented with extensive performance improvements and Home Certification tool integration in three months without the need to grow in-house or third party resources.

WASHINGTON (CNN) — The more often Americans go to church, the more likely they are to support the torture of suspected terrorists, according to a new analysis.

More than half of people who attend services at least once a week — 54 percent — said the use of torture against suspected terrorists is “often” or “sometimes” justified. Only 42 percent of people who “seldom or never” go to services agreed, according the analysis released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life.

White evangelical Protestants were the religious group most likely to say torture is often or sometimes justified — more than 6 in 10 supported it. People unaffiliated with any religious organization were least likely to back it. Only 4 in 10 of them did.

The analysis is based on a Pew Research Center survey of 742 American adults conducted April 14-21. It did not include analysis of groups other than white evangelicals, white non-Hispanic Catholics, white mainline Protestants, and the religiously unaffiliated, because the sample size was too small.

This is where all of the graduating seniors in my major set up their web and paper portfolios. Everyone from the department, friends and family, past graduates, and even future employers are invited. I've been to several of these in the past, so I'm excited that it's finally my time to do it!

Friday, April 24th - Student Awards Banquet
I was really shocked to have been selected as this years "Outstanding Senior" in my major. (Mostly because I didn't know we had such an award!) So I get to attend a banquet and I believe eat yummy food and see who else won. Korey was nominated for this in his major as well, but it's far more competitive in his major and I don't think he won or I think we would've heard by now.

Thursday, April 30th from 3:00 to 5:00 - Honors Graduation Ceremony
This ceremony is open to anyone for attendance but is specifically for my graduation from the Honors program. I will be given my honors graduation cords and will have a professor speak about me. I've never been to one of these before, so I'm not sure what to expect!

So it appears i am forced to use the $2 for 20 minutes of internet provided in the lobby of the hotel to post this, but i greatly regret sounding like such a doofus in that email i sent mom about my scuba/snorkle in the Great Barrier Reef. Had i appropriate internet, i would upload a few awesome photos i have of all of us from our live aboard boat. And i promise when i return in a few days you'll all get to see those photos and hear a better version of what all we did and saw.

Ohio man arrested for drunk driving on a homemade vehicle

MARCH 31--In a law enforcement first, Ohio cops this month arrested a man for drunk driving on a motorized bar stool. That's right, a motorized bar stool, which can be seen below in a police evidence photo. According to cops, Kile Wygle, 28, crashed his bar stool near his Newark home earlier this month and called 911 due to his injuries. When an officer arrived and asked Wygle what happened, he answered, "I wrecked my bar stool." According to a Newark Police Division report, a copy of which you'll find here, Wygle's homemade ride is powered by a Briggs & Stratton lawnmower engine. Wygle noted that the bar stool could hit nearly 40 miles per hour, but that he was only going 20 when he wiped out late in the afternoon on March 4 (a witness told police that he spotted someone driving a "strange motorized machine" before the crash). A plastered Wygle, who failed a series of field sobriety tests, was charged with DUI and driving with a suspended license, both misdemeanors. His bar stool was not impounded.

Emma was able to email me today --- here is what she had to say!

So, i don't really have internets again. I didn't want to buy a week since we wont be here a full week. and my roommate is buying it through the one ethernet cable in our room anyway, so i couldn't use it on my computer even if i did buy it.

I was going to buy a days worth of wireless for today but they are sold out of them at reception. So basically i am screwed and i am sneaking on my roomies computer right now before she wakes up, because as soon as she wakes up she will be inseparable from it.

ANYWAY, none of that matters, because this weekend was amazing!!!!
Some of our group (myself included) ended up paying extra to do intro scuba dives and it was SO COOL. All tolled i snorkeled four times and scuba dove three times. The live aboard boat was so much fun too. They woke us up at 5:45AM to snorkel at 6AM, which i did both times. On Sunday morning i got to swim with sea turtles! I made friends with one of them and he made me rub his shell for at least five minutes! He kept turning to make me rub different spots, just like a cat. IT WAS SO COOL! best morning of my life!

We ALSO got to do a night scuba dive, where we were attached to an instructor at all times and dove with flashlights. WE SAW FOUR SHARKS!!! scary but really cool!

We have lots of hilarious photos to show when we get back. I look extra awesome because my hair is just crazy. Imagine me diving in saltwater atleast 3 times a day, then riding a windy boat and only being allowed one three minute shower a night. No one cared though because it was just too much fun.

Anyway, i have so much work this last week it isn't funny. I am not going to get to have as much fun as everyone else, but i guess i will live.

I wish i could keep writing, but my roomie will be up in a few minutes, so i need to get off her computer! ah!
